Surfacing is one of the most time consuming and expensive process in track construction. SWI is the first company in North America to use Gedo IMS technology for track scanning on their current project. Gedo can capture track position in the 3D space just by rolling it along the track and only needs to be calibrated every 300 feet. The collected data is then directly entered into the tamper through a flash drive; and tamper automatically aligns the track based on that data. Gedo has significantly reduced the manual work, where we could surface 1000 feet of track in a day, now we can surface 3000 feet. Gedo is also being used for generating as-builts and quality control, where the file generated by it can be compared with the designed CAD file. Due to its high accuracy, efficiency and simplicity, this equipment will change the way tracks are constructed globally.
